Accrediting Artifact Calibration of a Multi-Function Calibrator

چکیده
A decade ago, two companies introduced electronic instruments incorporating Artifact Calibration, a technology by which an instrument calibrates itself using a small number of external standards, thereby significantly reducing the cost of calibration and simplifying their path of traceability. Some national standards laboratories have been cautious about accepting Artifact Calibration, perhaps because most of the external verification traditionally done is replaced by characterizations performed inside the instrument beyond the control and oversight of the operator. However, the large reduction in cost of ownership that comes with Artifact Calibration is a strong motivation for broader acceptance, particularly for high accuracy instruments whose calibration would otherwise require time-consuming procedures and more expensive standards. Toward this end, the national standards laboratories of the Netherlands (Nederlands Meetinstituut or NMi), Sweden (Sveriges Provnings-och Forskninginstitut or SP), and Germany (PhysikalischTechnische Bundesanstalt or PTB) undertook an independent evaluation of Artifact Calibration as implemented in the Fluke 5700A with the goal of increasing acceptance of Artifact Calibration. This paper gives background for the project and briefly reports preliminary project results and conclusions. A more complete report will be published later in 1998, and among others will be presented at the October 1998 meeting of the DC/LF experts group of the European co-operation for Accreditation (EA).

Design and calibration of a cryogenic blackbody calibrator at centimeter wavelengths
We describe the design and calibration of an external cryogenic blackbody calibrator used for the first two flights of the Absolute Radiometer for Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Diffuse Emission (ARCADE) instrument. The calibrator consists of a microwave absorber weakly coupled to a superfluid liquid helium bath. Half-wave corrugations viewed 30° off axis reduce the return loss below −35 dB withi...
متن کاملSignificance of local international sensitivity index systems for monitoring warfarin and liver function.
OBJECTIVES Use of a local calibrator has been recommended for standardization of the international normalized ratio (INR) and international sensitivity index (ISI). We investigated the performance of two commercial local calibrators for warfarin monitoring and determined the significance of liver-specific INR. METHODS ISI values were determined using the World Health Organization (WHO) method...
متن کاملCalibration Test of PET Scanners in a Multi-Centre Clinical Trial on Breast Cancer Therapy Monitoring Using 18F-FLT
UNLABELLED A multi-centre trial using PET requires the analysis of images acquired on different systems We designed a multi-centre trial to estimate the value of 18F-FLT-PET to predict response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer. A calibration check of each PET-CT and of its peripheral devices was performed to evaluate the reliability of the results. MA...
متن کاملThe Characterization of a Piston Displacement-Type Flowmeter Calibration Facility and the Calibration and Use of Pulsed Output Type Flowmeters
Critical measurement performance of fluid flowmeters requires proper and quantified verification data. These data should be generated using calibration and traceability techniques established for these verification purposes. In these calibration techniques, the calibration facility should be well-characterized and its components and performance properly traced to pertinent higher standards. The...
متن کاملABSOLUTE CALIBRATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF THE MULTIBAND IMAGING PHOTOMETER FOR SPITZER. I. THE STELLAR CALIBRATOR SAMPLE AND THE 24 μm CALIBRATION
We present the stellar calibrator sample and the conversion from instrumental to physical units for the 24 μm channel of the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). The primary calibrators are A stars, and the calibration factor based on those stars is 4.54× 10 MJy sr (DN/s), with a nominal uncertainty of 2%. We discuss the data-reduction procedures required to attain this accuracy; wi...
